Matei Dumitriu (b. 1995) lives and works in Bucharest, Romania. He completed his studies in Painting at the National University of Arts in Bucharest. In 2018, he started to incorporate multiple media in his projects, working with digital printing, installation and video, while maintaining a day-to-day painting routine. His last three solo shows in Bucharest – How to whisper in 2019 at Bluf, Senzații ieftine/Cheap thrills in 2020 at Atelier35 and A glimpse, approximately in 2022 at Suprainfinit Gallery – were put together as large scale installations. Ever since meme trends became common language for the everyday digital user, his main source of inspiration, present all throughout his works, is internet-based visual information that is part of the public domain. Central to his latest series of paintings is the way visual stimuli get so routinised that every image posted online looks like a screenshot of a screenshot. Seeing a meme is as familiar as looking at a spring landscape.
